Lessons Disney Princesses Taught Me

Disney Princesses are sometimes the first role model a young girl has. I remember the very first princess I could relate to was Belle. I loved to read more than the average kid in my class and always felt like an oddball. I have grown up to learn that that's simply what makes me unique!  The lessons that these Disney Princess films teach us are important to the self esteem of young children. I feel absolutely blessed that as im getting older, Disney is coming out with Disney Princess films and series that inspire children to go for their dreams and be their best self!

It is a bit upsetting when people try to twist the narrative of princesses like Ariel, Cinderella and Aurora into negatives and not appreciate the true moral lesson. So here I am, ready to share what my take away is from  Disney Princess is! Note: I am going to Include Anna and Elsa despite them not being a part of the official Disney Princess Lineup.

Snow White

Snow White in Magic Kingdom

Don't be narcissistic! Be kind and giving to those less fortunate than you even when you feel you don't have much yourself. A simple smile and a song could make anyone's day better! Snow White cleaned the dwarves house when she literally was chased out of her home and was supposed to be killed by her stepmom's hitman. She was grateful for the hospitality even when she had nothing.

Aurora

Heed the advice given to you and take constructive criticism. Aurora didn't listen to her good fairies advice about talking to strangers and while it did get her closer to her true love, it got her caught up in Maleficent's spell with the spinning wheel.

Cinderella

Cinderella and Prince Charming in Festival of Fantasy Parade

Even when you are at your lowest point, try to look at the positive in every situation. Cinderella was abused by her own family and treated as a servant. Yet she continued to always find the light in the darkness and look for positivity and hope.

Ariel

Ariel in Festival of Fantasy Parade

Read before you sign! All I'm saying is it would have helped Ariel to read Ursula's contract prior to signing on that dotted line. it worked out in the end but I've kept that moment in the back of my head for years!

Belle

Belle and Beast in Festival of Fantasy Parade

Don't be afraid to be true to yourself! I always hid things that I loved when I was in middle school do to the fear of being judged and shunned by my peers. During that time, it's hard for anyone. But Belle is literally an oddball to EVERYONE in her village except her father for reading and she didn't care what people thought of her! She had a mind of her own and followed her heart and mind.

Pocahontas

Listen with your heart. Sometimes your intuition has to overcome logic. Pocahontas was very strong willed, independent , curious and resourceful. She did not fear what she did not know but embraced it. She chose the path of morality when it came to deciding what was best to do with the strive between the Virginians an her people. Making bold moves and following her heart led her to do the right thing.

Jasmine

Princess Jasmine and Aladdin in the Magic Kingdom Welcome Show

Take control of your life! Jasmine was not for having men sit around and plan her future and destiny. She was not at all willing to be an object for someone. She knew she was a cunning, clever woman who had much more to offer than just beauty. She left her home and was set on carving out her own way. While it didn't quite turn out that way, in the end, she got the man she wanted and not one that as chosen for her.

Mulan

Prove them all wrong and be selfless! Mulan always felt like a failure because she could not bring her family honor by being the perfect daughter or potential bride. She took her father's place in the Chinese army knowing the consequences if she was discovered, was death. Yet, she didn't care about her own life, but the life of her father's who she loved dearly. Not only did she sacrifice herself for her father, she proved to be one of the army's best warriors, despite being a female. She gained honor to her family name and proved to everyone she was worth so much more than what was expected of her.

Tiana

Princess Tiana During the Magic Kingdom Welcome Show

Hard work will be rewarded as long as you believe in it but it will be all for naught if you don't have anyone to share it with!  Tiana believed wholeheartedly that she could bring her father's dream of an amazing restaurant a reality. Even when it seemed like it was lost when another buyer bought her perfect location, working 2 jobs and saving all her money, she realized through her journey that it wouldn't be complete without someone to share it with her. Having fun is okay sometimes ! Always make sure to take a break and accept help when its offered! There's no shame in it! Your loved ones want to see you succeed !

Rapunzel

Rapunzel in the Magic Kingdom Welcome Show

No one can stop you from breaking free, no matter how much power they hold! Just because you don't understand something, doesn't mean its wrong. Rapunzel was unknowingly being held captive by mother Gothel and no matter how much she pleaded, she couldn't leave. She was fed fears of the outside world constantly but knew in her heart she wanted to see what it had to offer her. With Flynn Rider's help, she achieved that goal and overcame a lot of fears along the way, feeling exhilarated by the new dreams she was discovering!

Merida

Merida making Bear Claws in the Magic Kingdom Welcome Show

Don't let society tell you what you should do or how you should behave and don't take your parents for granted! Merida was thoroughly frustrated with the fact that her mother was pressing her to marry when she was nowhere near ready! She tried to take an easy way out which became quite a journey! but along the way, she came to appreciate the love and sacrifices that her mother gave her as her daughter. Eventually, her mother did come to respect her choice and allowed her to carve her own destiny.

Anna and Elsa

Elsa and Anna in Mickey's Royal Friendship Faire

Don't shut your loved ones out! Elsa feared hurting her sister Anna with her ice powers and ultimately feared herself because she didn't want to lose control of her powers again. After the passing of their parents, she shut anna out completely and didn't get to properly grieve with her only living relative. Despite shutting her out, Anna still loved Elsa and did anything to make sure she was safe and knew she was loved just the way she was. More importantly, she showed elsa that she did not fear her. Let those who love you help you overcome your hardships and help you get through your struggles. let them remind you that you aren't alone.
